The types of coffee - from your local coffee shop to the world

There are various types of coffee out there.  If you walk into a coffee shop, you are sure to be confused by the wide array of options you have to choose from.  If you take the time to understand the various types of coffee, though, you will have more of an ability to choose the coffee that is right for you.  Here is a breakdown of what you need to know about the coffee options you have.

Two Types

There are two main types of coffee to choose from

  • Coffee Arabica:  This type of coffee is a much higher quality of coffee.  It was first cultivated in the Arabian Peninsula, although it is cultivated around the world today.  Yet, it is still a much more expensive version because it can only be grown in specific locations.  This is coffee house quality coffee (the good ones of course!)
  • Robusta:  This is the less expensive version because it is able to be grown in more areas.  It also has a much higher concentration of caffeine in it.  This is the type of coffee that you will find in your ground coffees from your supermarket and in most instant coffees.  It is more bitter than Arabica.  Espressos are generally Robusta as well.

In Your Local Coffee Shop

When you visit your local coffee shop and look up at the wide range of coffee products on the menu, use this list to help you to know the differences in the types of coffee offered.

  • White Coffee:  Black coffee that has milk added to it.
  • Cappuccino:  This has equal parts of espresso, steamed milk and milk froth in it.  It can have spices added to it or can have cocoa added to it for additional flavors.
  • Flat White:  Espresso topped with steamed milk.
  • Latte:  Espresso coffee that has steamed milk added to it in a ratio of 1/3 espresso and 2/3 steamed milk.  It is weaker than cappuccino.  It is also served cooler than black coffee.  It may be flavored with caramel, vanilla, and others.
  • Mocha:  A flavored coffee that is added to coffees, in this case it is chocolate.  Other flavorings that can be added include cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange as well as a wide range of others.
