As you probably know, instant coffee is a kind of beverage made of coffee. Through various manufacturing processes the coffee is dehydrated into a powder. Instant coffee (originally called ’soluble coffee’) was mentioned first in 1771 when the British government granted a patent for a coffee compound. Since then there have been many attempts in order to make instant coffee more delicious but capturing the essence of freshly roasted and brewed coffee has proven a very difficult task.
Instant coffee was first invented in 1901 by a Sartori Kato a Japanese scientist from Chicago-, however it was not marketed commercially until Nescafé launched in 1938.
In the ’life’ of instant coffee there was a very important advancement in the 1960’s when the process of agglomeration was introduced. What does this mean? Particles of instant coffee were steamed and made sticky what means they would clump together and the clumps were then redried by reheating. The result was a much better looking product that closer resembled ground coffee but the flavor may have actually been degraded even further by the additional heating cycle.
Finally, the popularity of instant coffee soared in America in the 70’s and today you can find it all over the world.
