If you’re a conscious consumer, wanted to know that what you eat or drink is chemical free with no fillers or fluff to make it taste good, then you must be interested in getting tips on home coffee roasting for sure.
People have misconceptions that if coffee roasting can be done at home it must be difficult, in actuality it’s the exact opposite. There are many appliances right in your own kitchen that can roast a quality cup of coffee you’d be proud to drink, for example, things like a wok, toaster oven, skillet and even a popcorn maker can roast yummy coffee beans with the convenience of being at home.
The general tips for coffee bean roasting is essentially the same no matter what appliance you choose to use and should only take between 10 – 15 minutes of your time, so watch closely. Below you will find the basic steps to getting you started.
- When buying your organic beans they should be of nearly equal size and similarly shaped to each other. How evenly the coffee beans will roast is based on balance and can affect the appearance and taste of the coffee so do it in small batches.
- Heat up your beans to between 460F up to 530F.
- Turn on the stove fan before you begin as there will be some smoke developing the longer the beans roast.
- As moisture evaporates the beans will begin to roast while the oils secrete and sugars caramelize, the longer you roast the beans, the stronger, darker and more flavorful the coffee will be (don’t over roast as they will burn).
- There will be cracking while the coffee beans are roasting, don’t worry that’s part of the process. Just remember the first crack is a light roast the second is fairly dark roasting, the more cracks you hear the darker the beans will get and will begin to burn and taste bitter.
Remember, it’s all about trial and error so take a chance and experiment with different times and coffee beans as the taste will vary with each batch.
