Blue Mountain coffee beans come from the island of Jamaica in an area called Blue Mountain. These mountains are the tallest on the island, almost 7,500 feet above sea level, making it the highest coffee region in the entire world.
The Blue Mountains offer a great environment to grow coffee beans. It all started back in 1728 by Sir Nicholas Lawes, who brought Arabica beans to the island. The arabica beans exploded and coffee is one of Jamaica's largest exports.
The taste of Blue Mountain beans are described as sweet and clean tasting. There are different types of Blue Mountain coffee beans, that I have listed below.
- Blue Mountain Coffee -
Beans of Screen 17/18 sizes with maximum defects of 2% and maximum of 4% smaller (lower case) beans.
- Blue Mountain No. 1 - Beans of Screen 16 sizes with maximum defects of 2% and a maximum of 4% smaller (lower case) beans.
- Blue Mountain No. 2 - Beans of Screen 15 size with maximum defects of 2% and a maximum of 4% smaller (lower case) beans.
- Blue Mountain No. 3 - Beans from single seed berries with Screen 10s size. Maximum of 2% defects and a maximum of 4% smaller (lower case) beans.
- Blue Mountain Triage - A combination of No. 1, No. 2 & No. 3 beans which has minor physical defects, which will not affect the cup quality of the coffee.
- Blue Mountain Triage Peaberry Coffee - Peaberry coffee beans from the Blue Mountain which has minor physical defects but good cup quality. Maximum of 4% defects.
- “Special Triage” (Triage B) - Coffee of lower quality than regular triage – more defects and paler beans
- High Mountain Supreme Coffee - Large beans from the Non-Blue Mountain coffee growing beans. Sizes 17/18 beans maximum of 2% defects and 96% minimum of size 17/18 beans. Blue green appearance, good acidity, good body, clean taste.
